In 1958 Japan, college teacher Tatsuo Kusakabe and his two girls, Satsuki and Mei, move into an old house. The house occupied by minuscule animals called susuwatari—little, dull, dust-like house spirits seen while moving from light to dim places.[note 1] When the young ladies become agreeable in their new house, the ash spirits go out.

At some point, Mei finds two little spirits who lead her into the empty of a huge camphor tree. She becomes friends with a bigger soul, which recognizes itself by a progression of thunders that she deciphers as “Totoro”. She nods off on Totoro, yet when Satsuki discovers her, she is on the ground. In spite of numerous endeavors, Mei can’t give her family Totoro’s tree. Tatsuo solaces her by disclosing to her that Totoro will uncover himself when he needs to.
